Everyone Needs A Shoe Guru!_wooshoes

2008-06-12

I was at a luncheon for the N.Y. and N.J. minority supplier development council at the Marriot Marquis on Monday.

There was a group of corporate women talking about shoes and how they no longer have to struggle to find a good pair of shoes at a good price. All you have to do is hire the “shoe guru.”

I didn’t get to meet him at the luncheon. I thought they were kidding. But it stayed with me and today I met him. His name is Oscar Gorham and he is fabulous. He is a stylist from Harlem with clients that range from CFOs to business owners. He charges based on the deals he finds for you. For most of his clients money is not an issue, but he still tries to get the sales.

Her are some of his best tips:

  • Go for comfort.

  • Never wear your best shoes on the street. Bring flipflops or sneakers to switch into.

  • Keep your shoes in boxes in your closet. (I don’t do that!)

  • Use shoe bags to keep your shoes from rubbing up against other things in your bag.

  • Get to know your sales person. They usually do work on commission but they have an inside scoop as to when the sales happen.

  • Its all about sole. Leather is best even though certain dress shoes now are made of special rubber and cushion for your feet.

  • Try to walk around the store a little with your new potential shoes on.

You don’t need a guru to find the best shoes. You just need a little time and the right steps!
